The World Outside

how many times do I say thank you
for bringing a new pair of socks,
taking blood without leaving a bruise
or simply taking the time to spend a
few words that originate outside this room
which has grown smaller and tighter
leaving the outside world in a small black box
hanging on the wall opposite the bed
