Easter Crime

Paaskekrim, a unique custom in Norway, starts on Maundy Thursday and continues through Easter Sunday. It's the time to read mysteries.

Television and radio stations plan special mystery series for Holy Week.

Some people believe that the custom began in 1923 "with an advertisement of Gyldendal's publisher Harald Grieg."

The following appeared on the front page of a popular newspaper. "Bergen train looted in the night."

That simple line was meant to lure readers to a new crime book by Nordahl Grieg and Niks Lie. It worked. By the next year the publishing house of Aschehoug began to hone in on Easter as a fit time for the publication of mysteries .
