In the Bronx

Nothing beat out a Charlotte Russe,
a thin layer of sponge cake covered
with mounds of real whipped cream,
topped with a Maraschino cherry ,
held together in a scallop edged
push-up cardboard cup.Sometimes
Eddie at the bakery added slivers
of chocolate. We tried to see who
could make the whipped cream
last longer, who might extend pure joy.
